What to Do: Turn on the blower, and set a ball in the air stream. What keeps the ball inside the air stream? You can take the hose and move it around. Does the ball move along with the hose? How stable is the motion of the ball?
What is Happening: Pressure in air decreases with increasing velocity: this is known as the Bernoulli Effect. Therefore the pressure is lower in the stream of air than it is in the air surrounding. The ball thus feels a force pushing it into the center of the stream ,where it will remain.
If the ball or balloon bounces away, please return it to the ex- periment. Thanks!
